Community-Centered Food and Climate Action: Empowering Women and Youth

At the heart of our approach to food and climate action is a deep commitment to engaging with communities, with a particular emphasis on women and youth. This commitment drives our Sustainable and Inclusive Food-systems Agents (SIFA) program, which aims to empower women and youth as catalysts for change within our food systems.

Last week was especially significant as we engaged with women in Migori County’s Nyatike Constituency. Our discussions centred on value addition, focusing on utilizing Indigenous and locally available resources to enhance our health.

We emphasized the need to reconnect with our traditional foods, prioritize value addition, and integrate Indigenous Traditional Knowledge with modern technology. We also highlighted the importance of documenting this knowledge and adopting a sustainable approach to the entire value chain. Most importantly, we explored the concept of viewing food as medicine. These discussions provided invaluable insights for everyone involved.

It’s worth noting that we had a similar engagement with these women in February. It was inspiring to learn of their actions to implement some of our previous discussions despite Africa CSID’s current lack of resources to support their efforts directly.

We are confident that the impact of these engagements will be profound, benefiting both current and future generations.
